Our History
The Faculty of Agriculture at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) was established as one of the founding faculties of the university, in alignment with the institution’s mission to contribute meaningfully to the agricultural and economic development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large.
Originally conceptualized in response to the urgent need for practical and research-based agricultural education in the Niger Delta region, the Faculty opened its doors to its first cohort of students in 2010. Since then, it has grown in both size and influence, becoming a center of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement in agricultural sciences.
Located at the Obio Akpa Campus, in the agriculturally rich southern region of Akwa Ibom State, the Faculty enjoys access to diverse ecological zones, fertile farmland, and a strong rural-urban interface—making it ideal for hands-on agricultural training, fieldwork, and applied research.
Over the years, the Faculty has expanded to include several departments, such as:
🔸 Agricultural Economics
🔸 Agricultural Extension
🔸 Animal Science
🔸 Crop Science
🔸 Soil Science
🔸Fisheries and Aquaculture
Through robust academic programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Faculty has trained hundreds of graduates who have gone on to excel in agribusiness, research, academia, and public service. Collaborative partnerships with industry, government, and development agencies have further reinforced its relevance in advancing food security, agricultural policy, and sustainable development.
Today, the Faculty continues to evolve, integrating modern technologies, embracing climate-smart agriculture, and promoting entrepreneurial skills among students. It stands as a pillar of AKSU’s vision to be a world-class institution that empowers individuals through knowledge and innovation.
