Dr. Kesit Nkeme
Head of Department
Welcome Note
Welcome to the Department of Agricultural Extension & Rural Development at Akwa Ibom State University — a place where agriculture meets human development, and knowledge becomes a tool for real community transformation.
Here, we are not only concerned with what farmers produce, but how, why, and under what social, economic, and cultural conditions sustainable progress can truly happen. Our programmes emphasize people centered development, effective communication of innovations, participatory learning, and community empowerment, because agriculture grows best where people, ideas, and resources are aligned. Through field-based training, research, and partnerships with rural communities, development agencies, and agricultural institutions, our students learn to diagnose real-world problems, translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions, and support individuals, households, and communities in achieving improved livelihoods.
On behalf of our dedicated faculty, staff, and students, I warmly welcome you to explore our academic activities, research initiatives, and extension engagements. As a student aspiring to create social impact, a development practitioner, a researcher, or a partner organization, you are invited to connect with us as we nurture skilled change agents who will strengthen rural economies and inspire sustainable agricultural development.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Agricultural Extension & Rural Development programme at Akwa Ibom State University is rooted in the belief that sustainable agricultural progress is achieved when scientific knowledge, local experience, and community participation work together. The programme is designed to develop graduates and postgraduates who understand not only agricultural innovations, but also the social, cultural, economic, and behavioral factors that influence how communities adopt and benefit from them.
It is guided by the conviction that meaningful rural development requires well-trained professionals who can communicate effectively, facilitate learning, inspire change, strengthen institutions, and support farmers and rural households in making informed and sustainable decisions. Through this philosophy, the programme aims to produce graduates who are development-oriented, ethically responsible, socially sensitive, and committed to empowering people, improving livelihoods, and promoting equitable rural transformation.
Vision
To be a recognised hub for building skilled extension professionals and rural development leaders who inspire innovation, empower farming communities, and foster sustainable, people centered agricultural transformation.
Mission
Our mission is to equip students, practitioners, and community partners with the knowledge, communication skills, and practical competencies needed to bridge the gap between research, policy, and real world farming systems. We are committed to promoting participatory learning, strengthening rural livelihoods, improving technology adoption, and driving inclusive, sustainable development through effective extension methods, collaborative outreach, and evidence based problem solving.
Objective
A graduate of the program is trained to accomplish the following:
i. Train students to become competent, professional extension agents capable of disseminating agricultural innovations and improving farmers’ decision-making.
ii. Develop critical thinkers and communication experts who can translate research findings into practical, culturally appropriate solutions for rural communities.
iii. Promote participatory rural development approaches that strengthen community empowerment, self-reliance, and resilience.
iv. Equip students with leadership, entrepreneurship, and advisory skills needed for careers in public, private, and development sectors.
v. Encourage research and evidence-based interventions that address local challenges such as low productivity, youth unemployment, food insecurity, and climate-related risks.
vi. Foster strong collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, and community-based organisations for experiential learning, field projects, and internship opportunities.
