Dr. Kesit Nkeme
Head of Department
Welcome Note
The Department of Agricultural Economics at Akwa Ibom State University is where agriculture meets innovation, policy, and enterprise. Our goal is to train forward-thinking economists who can transform agriculture from subsistence to profitability, combining analytical skill with a deep understanding of rural realities.
Through our B.Agric, PGD, M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes, students gain practical and research based knowledge in agribusiness management, farm planning, marketing, agricultural finance, and policy analysis. Learning goes beyond theory, hence, students engage directly with farmers, agripreneurs, and agencies to design real solutions to production, pricing, and resource challenges in the field.
Our lecturers are not only teachers but practitioners involved in agricultural policy formulation, impact evaluation, and agribusiness consultancy. Their work ensures that the Department remains relevant to national priorities, especially in promoting food security and economic diversification.
On behalf of the staff and students, I welcome you to the Department of Agricultural Economics webpage, a space that reflects our commitment to building a new generation of thinkers, innovators, and policy drivers for Nigeria’s agricultural economy. Explore our programmes, connect with our team, and be part of the movement shaping the business of agriculture at AKSU.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Agricultural Economics programme at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) is anchored on the need to develop skilled professionals capable of applying economic principles to address challenges in agriculture, agribusiness, and rural development. As a state with vast agricultural potential and a growing agribusiness sector, Akwa Ibom requires experts who can transform its natural and human resources into engines of sustainable economic growth.
The programme is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in both economics and agriculture, equipping them with analytical, quantitative, and managerial skills necessary for efficient resource allocation, policy formulation, and agribusiness innovation. It emphasizes the integration of theory with practice through research, field training, and community-based learning that respond to local and national development needs.
Through modern teaching approaches and exposure to real-world agricultural systems, students are prepared to contribute meaningfully to food security, rural transformation, and agribusiness competitiveness. The overarching goal is to produce graduates who can critically assess and manage the economic dimensions of agricultural production and marketing, ensuring sustainable agricultural development in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and beyond.
