Professor Sunday Ben Ekanem is a Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture with over three decades of teaching and research experience. He has taught in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology at the University of Calabar.
He obtained his B.Sc. in Fisheries from the University of Washington, Seattle, USA; his M.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquaculture from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA; and his Ph.D. in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria.
Professor Ekanem has served in several academic and administrative capacities, including supervisor and coordinator of undergraduate research projects, field course coordinator, examination officer, academic adviser, Chairman and Coordinator of Graduate Programmes, and Head of the Department of Zoology. He has successfully supervised hundreds of undergraduate students, as well as numerous postgraduate students.
He has served as an external examiner for the University of Uyo, the University of Berlin, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. He has also participated as a member of accreditation teams to the University of Port Harcourt, Delta State University, Abraka, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. In addition, he has served as a professional assessor for the University of Uyo, the University of Abuja, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ebonyi State University, and CRUTECH, Calabar.
Professor Ekanem is a member of several professional bodies, including the World Fisheries Society, the American Fisheries Society, the Fisheries Society of Nigeria, the Science Society of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Society for Biological Conservation.
He is currently a member of staff in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa Campus. He is married to Lawencia Ekanem, and they have children.
